Medicinal plants adorn new surgery

By | Latest News | No Comments

With ideas that have already won Hale Village Gold in London in Bloom and the Green Flag award this year, the landscaping team in Hale Village has innovated again.

Planting around the new GP surgery in the Village has been specially selected for its medicinal benefits in keeping with the wellbeing theme. The stunning selection of shrubs and plants, including St John’s Wort, Jerusalem Artichoke, Coneflower (Echinacea) and Lavender will provide year round colour and scents.

Michael Polledri, Chairman of Hale Village said, “We’re always looking for inspired ideas for our planting and using medicinal plants outside the surgery is a lovely idea.  It’s this level of attention to detail that keeps the Village looking so good and winning us such prestigious awards.”

Using medicinal plants for healing is as old as mankind itself, but we’ll be leaving any healing to the GPs. We hope residents and visitors to the surgery will appreciate the idea and enjoy the planting.

Here’s what’s on display

St John’s Wort (Hypericum x Moserianum ‘tricolor’)  – used topically to treat bruises, burns, insect bites and scabies. The plant has also been studied for the treatment of emotional disorders.

Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus Tuberosus) – dietary fibers in the artichoke’s root help eliminate toxic compounds from the gut and the root contains small amounts of anti-oxidant vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E.

Coneflower (Echinacea Purpurea) – known for fighting infection, boosting the immune system, alleviating pain and as an anti-inflammatory.

Lavender (Lavendula Angustifolia ‘Munstead’) – known benefits of using lavender are to reduce stress, heal cuts, improve sleep, alleviates headaches and improve eczema.

Hale Village named as one of the best in Britain

Hale Village is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Hale Village has extensive green spaces, generous internal gardens and roof terraces, including one with allotment space.  Sustainability is at its heart too; 80% of the village’s roof space is green and a former culvert has been planted to create an Eco Park connecting to the Lee Valley Regional Park. There are wildlife corridors to support the local habitat and the widespread planting throughout, where possible, is native to Haringey.  First class public realm, including seating, lighting and play equipment enrich the green spaces for residents to enjoy.

Michael Polledri, Chairman of Hale Village developer, Lee Valley Estates, said:“We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the first time.  It’s a remarkable achievement given how young the development is and a wonderful accolade from Keep Britain Tidy.

“This Award recognises and highlights that people in Hale Village are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

Hale Village wins London in Bloom – Judges say it could be the envy of any major European city

Hale Village has won Gold and been announced as overall winner in the London in Bloom 2016 Awards, London Village category.  Achieving 180 points out of a maximum of 200, the judges said Hale Village “could be the envy of any major European City.”

London in Bloom aims to make Greater London a greener capital and celebrates and recognises those that do.

The judges looked at overall impact, horticultural achievement, environmental responsibility and community participation and were impressed by the high standards in Hale Village in all the areas. They felt Hale Village was an excellent blueprint for anyone seeking a mixed community living in a high density scheme.

The Village was also applauded for its strict control of litter, anti-social behaviour and pleasant outside modern city cosmopolitan streetscape.

Geoff Hyde, Chairman of London in Bloom said, “The persistence, vision and focused investment of time, labour and money has meant that the site has excelled and become a worthy Gold Standard that others may now aspire towards.  We were impressed at the effort and attention to detail creating a pleasant, thriving and personal atmosphere.  Hale Village is a well-balanced integrated design that is hard to attain without the care of residents, the consistency of staff, an overall management masterplan and the combined effort of all to carry it through to this successful conclusion. Well done, it is well worth the Gold.”

Within the horticultural section, the judges praised Hale Village for the wide choice of interesting all year round plants and the use of herbs, fruit trees and bushes as well as the planning of the planting, creating landscaped walkways, a wildflower margin meadow and plant screening to reduce noise and dust.

It achieved nearly full marks in the community participation and environmental sections, impressing judges with the inclusion of local groups and stakeholders, close cooperation with the local diocese, as well as excellent Village facilities and combined heat and power unit and green roofs.

Commenting on the award, Michael Polledri, Chairman of Hale Village Ltd, said: This is a significant honour and we are delighted to receive this Award. It’s also a significant achievement and testament to the commitment and hard work of the Hale Village team, our partners, local groups, stakeholders and the people who live and work here.  Having also just been granted the Green Flag Award and highly commended in the Placemaking Awards, we feel very proud of this great Village.”

Hale Village was among 1,686 parks and green spaces around the UK to be awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award by Keep Britain Tidy in July.  The Flag is only awarded to spaces that have the highest possible standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent facilities.  It was highly commended in the Placemaking Awards, Mixed Use Brownfield Site category.

By | Latest News | No Comments

Hale Village GP practice officially opens

The new GP practice in Hale Village was officially opened yesterday by the Mayor of Haringey, Councillor Ali Gul Ozbek.  It has started with a patient list of zero and will allow around 7,000 people to register with a GP.

Called Tottenham Hale Medical Practice, it is the result of a collaboration between Haringey CCG, Haringey Council, Healthwatch Haringey, NHS England and Lee Valley Estates.  It will provide much needed primary care capacity for residents in the Tottenham Hale area.

At the opening event, short speeches were given by David Lammy MP, Councillor Jason Arthur, Lead Member for Health; Dr Peter Christian, Haringey CCG’s Chair, Sharon Grant, Healthwatch Chair and Liz Wise, Director of Primary Care Commissioning at NHS England (London Region).  The ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Haringey.

Attendees had a tour of the practice and an opportunity to meet practice staff from Lawrence House Surgery who will be running the new practice.

Dr Peter Christian, Haringey CCG’s Chair said: “It has taken a solid collaborative effort to make opening the new GP surgery in Tottenham Hale a reality and we would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work. We are delighted that local residents will now be able to access primary care services much more easily, when they need it.”

Michael Polledri, Chairman of Hale Village said: “It has been a pleasure to facilitate the building for the new practice.  It will be of great benefit to Hale Village and Tottenham Hale residents and we’re very pleased to have it here.”

Jason Arthur, Haringey Cabinet Member for Finance & Health said: “We have worked really hard to get a new GP practice for Tottenham Hale to give residents quality health care when they need it. The new Tottenham Hale GP practice will make Haringey a healthier borough.”

Sharon Grant OBE, Chair, Healthwatch Haringey said: “The opening of the new GP practice was instigated by local people who worked closely with us at Healthwatch Haringey to highlight poor GP access in the Tottenham Hale area, and indeed elsewhere in the borough. Whilst we are delighted with the new facility, we hope that it will be the first of many more in other parts of Haringey.”

Fiona Erne, Head of Primary Care in North Central London for NHS England (London) said: “We are delighted that Tottenham Hale Medical Practice has now opened, responding to the concerns rightly highlighted by Healthwatch and local people. The practice will provide high quality GP services for residents and will make a real difference in the local community.”
